Why is my radio marked "Do not use?" A very limited number of models commonly exhibit defects that are detrimental to other users of the system. Some are not true dual-timeslot radios and may interfere with users on the other timeslot. Others have some serious issues with spurious emissions. Please do not use these radios on the RATS DMR repeater. Learn more about these problems.
As of April 2026, the following radios are prohibited on the W4RAT DMR repeater due to significant defects. No codeplugs will be provided for these radios:
Ailunce HD2 -- Early firmware versions have significant defects -- do not use. Update to latest firmware and test for proper emissions and timeslot timing before use.
Baofeng DM-5R -- Early hardware versions are not permitted on our system. New "V3" model (released late 2018) resolves prior concerns.
Baofeng DM-5R Plus
Radioddity GD-55 Plus
Retevis RT81 -- Pre-2023 firmware has significant defects -- do not use. Update to latest firmware and test for proper emissions and timeslot timing before use.
